Grand National Betting: Why Irish Eyes are Smiling

0

In six of the last 12 years of the running of the Grand National, Irish trainers have been celebrating in the winner’s enclosure come the end of the grueling test of endurance. The 2011 race looks set to be another one where Irish-trained horses are set to dominate not only the ante post Grand National betting, but also to play a significant role in deciding who will be the winner on the day of the race.

It is certainly true that ante post horse racing odds can fluctuate wildly in the run up to an event and this is particularly the case for a huge race like the Grand National. Conversely, for a race like the Grand National it is a useful guide as to the horses in form. On the day of the race, when millions of people flock to betting shops to place their annual bet, the odds on the field can bear little resemblance to the ante post odds and picking a winner, for those who like to use the odds as a guide, can be difficult.

As such, a very good rule of thumb for the 2011 Grand National is to bet on one of the strong Irish contingent that will be lining up at Aintree on 9th April. Not only will the Irish horses be well backed on the day of the race, but they have been impressive in ante post markets.

The Willie Mullins-trained The Midnight Club is the current favourite and rightly so after an impressive victory at Fairyhouse earlier this year. Mullins last won the race in 2005 with Hedgehunter and The Midnight Club enters the race as the form most punters have been impressed with in the lead up to Aintree. Another positive is that Mullins’ stable is in good form, coming into Aintree having enjoyed an excellent few days at Cheltenham, with four winners to its name.

The sternest challenge to Mullins charge could well come from the Emerald Isle, too. Oscar Time, trained by Dublin-based Martin Lynch, has been backed at 12-1 in recent weeks after being very generously handicapped at 10-09.

This weight has a long tradition of doing well in the big race and though Oscar Time reportedly has issues with heavier ground and has never run the full race distance, he looks a well positioned to provide a fierce challenge at Aintree.

Another Irish-trained horse well placed in the betting is Big Fella Thanks, the Ferdy Murphy-trained charge who has finished sixth and fourth in the last two Grand Nationals. The nine year-old has the experience and form to push on from these promising showings, especially if Aintree specialist Ruby Walsh is given the ride.

With Niche Market, Ballabriggs and last year’s winner Don’t Push It also among the favorites in the betting leading up to the race, it seems a good bet that come the end of the big race, it will be Irish eyes smiling once again.

Bayern Munchen are favorites to sign Fabio Coentrao

Fabio Coentrao is considered one of the top left defenders in the world and most of the big clubs, such as Bayern, Liverpool, Chelsea or Barcelona, are interested in signing the  Portuguese starlet.

It seems that Bayern have the bigest chances. The latest reports from Portugal suggest that Bayern Munchen already made an offer of €20 millions but was not accepted.

Coentrao has a €30 millions release clause but it seems that 25 millions will be enough.

Jupp Heynckes, the new Bayern coach from next season, wants to change the defensive line at Bayern and Coentrao is top on his list.

Coentrao started his professional career at Rio Ave and moved to Benfica in 2007. The 23 years old defender has 12 appearances for the national team.

Juventus are also interested in signing Stekelenburg

Maarten Stekelenburg is one of the most wanted goalkeepers in Europe this season. Everybody knows that he is a world-class goalkeeper already with good experience as he has played over 200 games for Ajax.

Stekelenburg contract at Ajax Amsterdam expires in 2012 and he could be available at a lower price in the summer if Ajax don’t want to lose him for nothing in 2012. Stekelenburg hesitated to sign a contract extension with Ajax after some of the biggest clubs from Europe expressed their interest in signing him.

Besides Juventus, Milan, Manchester United and Arsenal are interested in signing the 29 years old goalkeeper.

Manchester United are the favorites as they desperately need a goalkeeper to replace Van der Saar who is going to retire after this season. Also Juventus have big chances but only if Buffon will leave the club.

Fiorentina are interested in signing Santon

Even if he has not played too much this season Santon is still considered one of the best youngsters in Europe.

Santon was wanted by several clubs also in the summer but Inter have not wanted to let him go as they are considering him the future of Inter. Santon failed to reproduce the last year performances and Inter decided that is best for him to be loaned in order to gain more playing time and improve his confidence.

The Italian youngster joined Cesena on loan until the end of the season. Nagamoto joined Inter also on loan to fill the void left by Santon departure.

However Inter are unlikely to accept bids from other clubs in the summer. Maicon could be sold and this way he could take his place.

Santon could play also on the left side if Chivu will be move to his natural position as central defender. As we can see there are a few options for Santon as everything depends on his form.

Corinthians are about to sign Adriano

Corinthians are about to take a top class striker. Adriano Leite Ribeiro will sign a contract with Brazilian team Corinthians.
Although a few years ago he was one of the best strikers in the world it seems that Adriano  had difficulties in finding a new team. The main reason was because of his unprofessional behavior.

The one who insisted that Adriano to sign with Corinthinas was Ronaldo,  a good friend and former teammate at the Brazil national team, which has a good relationship with the Brazilian club leaderships.
Adriano, was born on 17 February 1982 and is 1.90 cm, has played in the past for Flamengo, Fiorentina,Inter, Parma,Sao Paolo,As Roma. A few years ago was valued at 50 million euros but its price has fallen dramatically in the recent years, especially that it comes after an  unsuccessful experience in Italy,at AS Roma.

There he was not been able to play too much and he left the club in this winter.
After this failure, it seems that the former Brazilian international does not want to try his luck in Europe anymore and wants to stay until the end of his career in Brazil.
